MBSR is an acronym for Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. It describes a protocol for teaching mindfulness that is one of the most widely researched meditation programs available. Developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at U Mass Medical School, it is now widely available from certified trainers all over the country.
Mindfulness, the Pali word is SATI, is an acceptance practice. It teaches the skills needed to see and know things as they really are. A second and equally important skill is the skill of cultivation of wholesome mind states (like ease, joy and kindness) which can develop into wholesome character traits. This is the aim of cultivation, the Pali word is BHAVANA. This course introduces meditation practices that foster both mindfulness and the cultivation of wholesome traits.
Or almost free. There is a $40 fee to register and save your space and you will be expected to download a copy of the workbook from the Palouse Mindfulness website. The class is an offering of the Bhavana Community, a 501 (c)(3) organization. The courses typically cost between $300 and $500 to participate. We will be meeting on the Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 - 4:00 from January 9th through February 27th at the new Bhavana Community Space at Porter's Neck Yoga (106 Marshall Court, Unit 120 Wilmington NC 28411). Chairs are available. There is also a day-long practice session scheduled for Saturday, February 23rd at the home of Catherine Ibsen.
